History

In February 1999 San Francisco faced a crisis when the Women’s Needs Center, an organization that provided free health care services to over 4,000 women annually, was forced to shut its doors as the result of financial cutbacks at its parent organization, Haight-Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc. Out of concern for the impact the Women’s Needs Center’s closing would have on the local health care landscape, a group of volunteers and clinicians came together and, with the support of community members, colleagues, family and friends, decided to re-open the clinic as an independent entity. On June 28, 1999, just four months after the Women’s Needs Center closed, the Women’s Community Clinic opened its doors to the community.

Since its founding, the Women’s Community Clinic has used an innovative workforce development model to provide affordable and accessible health care services to Bay Area women and girls. With a proven track record of success, the Clinic has earned a reputation as a safe, welcoming environment where low-income women* and trans folks can access high-quality health services.

The Clinic has grown from a budget of $150,000 and one staff person to a budget of $3.4 million with 32 staff and more than 100 active volunteers. The Clinic now serves 4,000 women annually with over 6,000 clinical appointments, running on the strength, commitment, and passion of our community.

In November 2017, the Clinic joined forces with HealthRIGHT 360, a statewide network of clinical programs that serve low-income communities. This partnership expands access for our clients to even more crucial health resources around the Bay Area, and ensures that the Women’s Community Clinic’s expertise in high-quality, client-centered care is available to all Bay Area women who seek a trusted health provider.
